Journalism event at University of Derby

Our students will get words of wisdom from people with a lot of industry experience.

Professional journalists will give students the benefit of their years of experience at a University of Derby event aimed at helping its graduates get jobs in the media.

The 'Employability Day' event at the University's Markeaton Street site in Derby, tomorrow (Wednesday April 25), will see editors and other senior people from newspaper, TV and radio outlets talk to students about their careers, and what they expect of junior journalists beginning work with them. There will also be advice on working for oneself as a freelancer.

Wednesday's expert line-up will include:

  • Paul Myles, BBC College of Journalism
  • Steve Hall, Editor of the Derby Telegraph
  • Richard Bowyer, Deputy Editor of the Stoke Sentinel
  • Elaine Pritchard, media consultant and freelance Journalist
  • Nick Britten, Midlands correspondent for the Daily Telegraph
  • Marsha Ramroop, News Editor for BBC Radio Derby
  • Gail Mellors, Central TV News correspondent and University of Derby lecturer
  • Chris Morley, National Union of Journalists (NUJ) representative and freelancer
  • Christine Cawthorne, Head of website content specialist, Crocstar Media.

Lyn Champion, Programme Leader for the University's BA (Hons) Journalism degree course, said: "The idea of this event is that our students will get words of wisdom from people with a lot of industry experience, who are well placed to give very practical advice about their future careers."
