Major Changes To Atrium And B Block Link
18 June 2012
The Estates Department is currently working on a new and improved link between the Atrium and B Block at the Kedleston Road site.
The work will rotate the existing lifts 180 degrees, making them accessible from a newly extended Atrium, and removing the conflict between passing foot traffic and those people queuing for the lifts.
A separate walkway will be created alongside the lift waiting area, allowing for ease of movement through to B Block and the Atrium.
By rotating the lifts an additional major benefit will be that in future they will now stop on every floor level, not the half landing stages as was previously the case. This will offer improved accessibility for all those using the site.
Ian Willgoose, University Director of Estates, said: "Unfortunately, as with all major refurbishment and building works, there is an element of disruption, which some people may have already experienced.
"We apologise for this and would ask people to bear with us during the temporary disruption, which will be worth it for the gains achieved by the end."
The timescales for this project are:
- access to the small lift resumed at the beginning of next month (July) but only for less-abled staff and students
- all lifts back in operation by October 26.
Until then people will be directed around the works site by the clear local signage there.

Updates on the work's progress will be made available via the University's main website in the coming weeks.
