Local Chef Raises A Glass To Winning An Award
24 October 2008
A University of Derby graduate recently helped win his pub a Bronze award in the Best Pub experience category at the Enjoy England Excellence awards ceremony.
The awards, organised by East Midlands Tourism cover all areas of the visitor economy and are open to businesses across the East Midlands. They are designed to recognise excellence and reward those businesses that go the extra mile in providing a first class experience to visitors.
Alan Hill (40) from Chapel-en-le-Frith is Chef Patron at The Devonshire Arms, on the Chatsworth Estate in Beeley, Derbyshire and is the man behind its success. After leaving High Peak College, Buxton (now the University of Derby Buxton) with a professional catering qualification, Alan’s career has gone from strength to strength; including time at Michelin-starred restaurant Juniper in Altrincham, Cheshire.
Alan is passionate about using sustainable local produce and working with local suppliers which is reflected in the quality of the food served at The Devonshire Arms.
Alan said “Without a doubt gaining a professional qualification from such a reputable educational institution gave me the confidence I needed when first setting out in the real world of catering. Now that I run my own business, so much that I learned forms the basis of what I am able to pass on to my employees. The combination of a sound grounding in the fundamentals gained through a professional certified course and on the job training has set me on the road to success.”
Elizabeth Perry Programme Leader for Hospitality said “It’s always a pleasure to hear about our successful students; it’s a great testimony to the staff who taught them. Congratulations to Alan on his success, I wish him all the best for the future”.
