The University of Derby will be buzzing with interest this Saturday,14 May, when it hosts a workshop to help people learn all about insects.

Run by the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Entomological Society (DaNES), the workshop will provide the opportunity for the public to get a closer look at a bug's life, as well as the chance to learn more about the local environment.

The workshop will be held in the University's laboratories at its Kedleston Road site. Experts will be on hand to answer questions and provide advice about how to tackle current problems, such as the recent decline in bee populations.

John Millar, of DaNES, said: "The key aim of the workshop is to introduce people to the study and conservation of insects, as well as raising awareness about the challenges we face today.

"For example, many people are concerned about the reduction in the number of bees, or might want to know how they can find and identify different species. This workshop will help them with these issues and will also provide the chance to learn more about insects and conservation".

The workshop will feature an introductory talk and a slideshow presentation by photographer, and DaNES Chairman, Neil Ward.

There will also be a variety of specimens for visitors to look at in order to develop their understanding.

The workshop, which runs from 10am - 12pm, is being held in collaboration with the University of Derby and with help from funding provided by OPAL (Open Air Laboratories) and the Big Lottery.

Peter Walker, Community Relations Officer at the University, said: "At last year's BioBlitz event, we found out just how interested people are in insects and their conservation, and so we decided to explore how we can continue this work.

"We're delighted to support DaNES as they take their message forward and raise awareness about insects and their study in our communities".

The free workshop is open to anyone who wants to learn about insects, although it will not be suitable for children aged under 12. Numbers are limited, so to book your place, please contact John Millar at or call (01332) 290115.
