A national touring exhibition of the best of British illustration will be on display at the University of Derby from next week - and will feature work by seven of its graduates.

Images 35 is the latest annual celebration of UK illustrators' work, co-ordinated by the AOI (Association of Illustrators), and a leading showcase for the variety of modern illustration. Entries were chosen by a panel of industry experts.

A touring exhibition of the work, which began in London, will be at the University's Markeaton Street site in Derby from Monday 5 December until February 5, 2012. Entry will be open to all and free.

Among the 90 artworks featured in the Image 35 Exhibition: Best of British Illustration 2011 will be those of seven graduates from the University's own BA (Hons) Visual Communication degree courses. They are:

  • Rachel Slack, 22, of Kimberley, Nottinghamshire
  • Lydia Garner, 27, of Milford, Derbyshire
  • Heather Horsley, 40, of Burton-on-Trent
  • Thomas Phillips, 23, Telford, Shropshire
  • Catherine Sweetman, 47, of Maidstone, Kent
  • Bill McConkey, 32, of Pontecraft, West Yorkshire
  • Marketa Lukasova, 31, of Derby.

Heather Horsley, a 2011 Derby graduate, now has a studio at the University's Banks' Mill Studios business incubation units in Derby.

She said: "My artwork entry is called Roadside Cafes. The aim of it was to visually explore and comment upon the environment surrounding roadside cafes; observing and interpreting the relationship and connections between the place, the products and people who chose to use the cafes."

Richard Levesley, Derby's Programme Leader for BA (Hons) Visual Communication degrees in Illustration and Animation, added: "We are very proud of our students.

"Their achievement shows that they all have strong and individual ways of working."

School and college students interested in art and design will be visiting the University exhibition on Wednesday 14 December for a guided tour.
