High Peak Venue For Mountaineering Lecture

Climbing enthusiasts from around the UK gathered at the University of Derby's Buxton Campus on November 22, when it was the venue for a British Mountaineering Council (BMC) winter lecture.
The audience, which included students on the University's Outdoor, Adventure and Countryside Management degree programmes, heard national climbing experts Tamsin Gay and Tim Blakemore talk on a range of current climbing issues such as equipment and clothing, navigation, footwork, route planning, avalanche awareness and climbing skills.
Steve Lewis, lecturer in Outdoor Activities at the University of Derby Buxton, said: "We were delighted that the British Mountaineering Council chose Buxton as the venue for one of its winter lectures.
"It was a fantastic opportunity for students on our outdoor programmes to hear about current issues in climbing from two speakers with such a wealth of experience gained from their many years on the mountains."
Outdoor Activities Management BA (Hons) degree student, Paul Bruce, who is also President of Buxton Outdoor Club attended the lecture, and said: "The lecture was great revision of some of the skills we learnt on a winter trip to Scotland as part of our course. The speakers Tamsin and Tim knew their subject areas really well, so it was fantastic for me and the other students to learn more skills that we can go on to use in winter conditions."
