Henge, Health and Safety and Healing Opens Lecture Series
31 July 2007
Accidents, archaeology and anxieties will be among the subjects tackled in the first of a new series of the Devonshire Lectures.
The programme of public events brings experts on a wide variety of subjects to the University of Derby’s Devonshire Campus in Buxton to discuss their work.
Opening the new lecture series on Wednesday August 8 will be Dr Ian Heath, Associate Lecturer in Archaeology based at the University’s Buxton campus, who will speak on the history of the Peak District’s Henge or stone circle at Arbor Low, near Parsley Hey.
Dr Heath’s 45 minute lecture will aim to place the monument in the context of its wider prehistoric landscape.
On August 21 Eddie Morland, Chief Executive of the Health and Safety Laboratory based at Harpur Hill, will discuss its role in Using Our Brains to Save and Improve the Lives of Workers.
Examples of the work of the organisation will be exhibited during the talk from 6pm.
Prevention of a different kind will be covered in a presentation on Therapies and Phobias at 6pm in the Lecture Theatre on Wednesday September 19.
Dawn Keyes, an experienced Derbyshire homeopath who operates clinics in Bakewell and Ashbourne, will talk about the use of plant and flower essences to combat fears, anxieties and phobias. Mike Walton will then explain more about phobias and offer advice on how to combat common fears.
Entry to each of the three lectures will cost £6 for guests and £5 for Friends of the Devonshire and Corporate Partners.
