Work is well underway on the £1.5m refurbishment of the University's Harpur Hill sports facility in Buxton.

The facility has been closed since June (2010) to allow work to go ahead and will re-open after the Christmas break. The refurbishment project is being undertaken by Vinci Construction Plc, the contractor also behind the University's Markeaton Street site and Enterprise Centre.

Harpur Hill's refurbishment will eventually provide 1,300 square metres of space, including:

  • a new look sports hall
  • improved changing rooms
  • state of the art outside climbing wall
  • new roof and external rendering for the facility
  • three new classrooms.

Ian Willgoose, University Director of Estates, said: "The Harpur Hill refurbishment is another important stage in the University's improvement of its sports facilities; following previous projects such as the all-weather pitch and tennis courts at its Kedleston Road site.

"Buxton students will find it has been well worth the wait, when the facility re-opens in January 2011."
