University of Derby BA (Hons) Fashion Studies student Hannah Hoyle has been named as the Student Young Designer of the Year at the Clothes Show – and her work was inspired by Marilyn Monroe.

Hannah clinched the prestigious award today at the NEC in Birmingham – successfully beating nine other finalists. Fellow Derby student Sarah Maguire, also made it to the national final. The show is one of Europe’s biggest fashion events.

It was a fantastic achievement for both, as Hannah and Sarah had already beaten 300 other contenders to get to the national contest with the theme of ‘Icons’.

Final year student Hannah Hoyle, 22, from Hollesley Road, Alderton, Woodbridge, has been inspired by Marilyn Monroe for her creation. Her work was also inspired by Andy Warhol’s work.

Hannah produced a satin pleated dress, which revealed the image of the Hollywood icon once the pleats have opened. This has traces of the famous ‘air vent’ scene from her movie The Seven Year Itch (1955), which helped propel Monroe to fame and will be a feature of the catwalk routine when Hannah’s design is displayed.

Hannah has received an internship with a leading fashion designer and £2,000 worth of prize money. Another £1,000 will be donated to the University’s Fashion Studies department.

It’s been a year to remember for Hannah, who impressed so much at a work placement at John Lewis, as part of her degree course that she produced a clothing range which was on sale throughout the company’s stores nationally, earlier this year.

She said: “I’m absolutely over the moon to have won the competition. Sarah and I saw the standard of the competition and it was really high and I was stunned when my name was read out.

“I was delighted at the reaction my dress got from the audience – it seemed to generate a lot of interest with the Marilyn Monroe theme. It has capped a wonderful year winning this title – having designed clothes for John Lewis as well.”

Responding to the good news, Fiona Hawthorne, co-Programme Leader for the University of Derby's BA (Hons) Fashion Studies, and who works alongside fellow tutor Ann Draycott, said: “We are really pleased for them both and congratulations to Hannah. She worked so hard to get the design just right!”

Fellow finalist Sarah, 22, from Burman Road, Shirley, Solihull, was inspired by an American 1930s New York theme, and her clothing choice features a deep blue wool jacket with pale grey shorts. Sarah was inspired by icon landmarks, such as the famous Chrysler Building, and transportation links of that time.

Sarah spent a recent placement at Temperley in London, taking part in a series of activities including product development, design and styling.

The Young Designer of the Year Award, in association with Maybelline New York, is back again this year as it has proved so successful for the last three years.

Clothes Show Live is once again continuing its support for young British fashion and will seek out and support the most promising, fledgling fashion talent.

This competition will give one lucky and talented individual the opportunity of a lifetime. They will be given the chance to work with a top British Designer and receive prize money, not only for themselves but for the winner's art/design department.
