Have you ever been toiling in the garden, trowel in hand and struggled to remember how best to plant those carrots?

Worry not! Help is at hand thanks to University of Derby graduate Lorraine Burn who has created a pocket book guide to planting and growing vegetables.

The Veggie Grower's Bible offers practical, hands on advice for both inexperienced and experienced gardeners alike. As it fits into a pocket, gardeners can carry the full colour A6 size book around with them and refer to it when they are working on their vegetable patches.

Lorraine Burn (45) from Duffield has grown vegetables on her local allotment for several years for her family.

Lorraine, who graduated from the University in 2004 with a BA in English, is also a writer and noticed a gap in the market with the type of gardening books currently on offer.

The book helps growers find out:

  • how to prepare the ground
  • the best time to plant
  • how to look after plants
  • when to harvest;
  • plus there's information on the vitamin, mineral and nutrient content of each vegetable too.

Lorraine said: "The University of Derby gave me the confidence to discover there are lots of opportunities out there to explore."

Laura Ratcliffe, University of Derby Alumni Relations Officer added: "Here at Derby we're proud of growing our students into successful graduates. Lorraine has really taken this to heart combining her two passions, writing and gardening."
