For graduate James Laing, who collected his award at January's 2012 Ceremonies, the completion of the HND Social Studies was formalised the many years of his life he has dedicated to voluntary work in the community.

James, 55, was made redundant 13 years ago, but in that time dedicated his time to working voluntarily in the community. In 2009 he was nominated for a Derby Telegraph Champions award for his work with companies and projects including first-aid charity British Red Cross, Disability Direct in Derby, Derbyshire Royal Infirmary and Derby City General Hospital.

James has also spent time as a school governor and parish councillor and represented the Burton upon Trent branch of the British Red Cross at a garden party at Buckingham Palace 2008 presented with commendation award.

James channelled all of this knowledge and experience into his HND in Social Studies, and believes the formal qualification with consolidate on his voluntary work and help his career in the social sector progress.

He said: "What a great day of honour to be in such company at Derby Cathedral."
