A group of 42 professionals working in the quarrying, asphalt, concrete and related industries have graduated from internationally recognised training courses offered through University of Derby business-to-business arm, University of Derby Corporate.

Presided over by Andrew Hartley, Managing Director of Strategic Developments at the University of Derby, the ceremony, on 28 January, featured a special address by Mike Connell, National Quality Manager, for Hanson Cement.

The quarrying, asphalt and concrete technology training courses have been developed by University of Derby Corporate in partnership with the Institute of Quarrying, the Institute of Asphalt Technology and the Concrete Society, ensuring the content is aligned to employers' requirements.

The programmes give new or experienced people within the industry the opportunity to gain a highly regarded academic qualification.

The courses are designed to be studied whilst in employment and combine distance learning with virtual lectures, weekend tutorials and field trips. Assessment is through a mixture of coursework and exams, with each successful graduate receiving a University Diploma or Certificate at the end of their studies.

Paul Wilkinson, Head of Corporate Partnerships at University of Derby Corporate, said: "The training courses that we offer are popular with employers who place a high value on their workforce and see investing in staff development as a key factor in their businesses' success, in spite of the challenging economic conditions.

"Our graduates have worked extremely hard; demonstrating a real commitment to personal growth by balancing a busy work and home life with study. I'd like to extend to them our sincerest congratulations and best wishes for the future."

Rhys Buckley, who graduated with a University Diploma in Quarry Technology, added: "The whole course has been a really positive experience for me; from the confidence gained in getting through the first year, to progressing and successfully completing my diploma. I've already noticed the benefits that additional training can bring; I started a new job this year and know that my diploma played a major role in securing the position."
