Glitz And Glamour On Show For Charity
30 January 2007
Hairstyles from the contemporary to the avant-garde will be on show next Monday.
For our Hair and Beauty students, it’s a great opportunity to work together to showcase their creativity in a display that’s open to the public. They will experience some of the conditions they might encounter backstage at a major fashion show!

Students are set to create all the glitz and glamour of the fashion world at a charity hair and beauty extravaganza next week in Buxton. The event on behalf of Breast Cancer Care will be held at the University of Derby’s Devonshire Campus next Monday evening, February 5, between 6.00pm and 8.30pm.
It will be a chance to see a glittering variety of contemporary styles displayed on the catwalk – a fusion of creative hairstyling and dramatic makeup on display against the stunning backdrop of the Devonshire. The students’ styling and makeup work will be modelled in various categories and judged by an expert panel.
Our judges will be: Gio Belli, a salon owner from New Mills; Maurice Lister, who verifies educational standards for City & Guilds; Hew Ellis of the Hew & Friends salon in Buxton; Liz Bond, who runs Face Facts in Buxton; and former Hair and Beauty programme manager Mary Hurt.
Everyone is welcome to join the audience for this worthwhile event. Tickets cost £3, and all proceeds go to Breast Cancer Care, the UK’s leading provider of breast cancer information and support. A drink will be provided on arrival, and there will be entertainment during the interval and a prize raffle.
Katy Wayne, Lecturer in Hairdressing, said: “This is truly a collaborative event. It demonstrates great teamwork in bringing together the Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy students at all levels, and three BA (Hons) Events Management students lending their skills to staging the event as well.

Throughout the afternoon the Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy students will work on their models ready for the evening’s catwalk show.
The full range of vocational courses in hair and beauty offered at the University of Derby’s Buxton Campus will be showcased, from City & Guilds to National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) at Levels 1, 2 and 3. Each level has a different brief:
- The 14-16 year old City & Guilds students on the course in Salon Services will be styling a ‘club theme’ – hair and makeup for a typical night out on the town.
- The NVQ Level 1 students will show ‘Think Pink’ – in keeping with Breast Cancer Care’s awareness raising campaigns – anything using the colour pink.
- NVQ Level 2 students have four choices: Commercial Cut and Colour; ‘Up Town Girl’, for a more sophisticated look; ‘Wedding Bells’ – hair and beauty for brides to be; or ‘Sparkling Occasion’ – a totally glamorous look.
- The NVQ Level 3 students have been given free reign to explore their imagination in the ‘Fantasy and Avant-Garde’ section.
