Getting Top Tips To Tackle Jobs Market
20 September 2011
Graduates of, and final year students at, the University of Derby are being offered a free tailor-made training package aimed at boosting their chances when job hunting.
Responding to the current tough employment market, the centre's experts launched a 'Graduate Destinations' initiative during the last academic year 2010/11.
This offered final year students and recent Derby graduates lessons in job hunting, CV and letter writing, business networking, interview techniques and other skills necessary to land their ideal job.
The one to two hour long individual sessions were run at a time when those about to complete their courses begin applying for jobs and company graduate schemes, and a similar series will be held this October to December 2011.
Stuart Windle, Marketing and Communications Co-ordinator for the Career Development Centre, said: "No one can be in any doubt that there is a lot of competition out there for good jobs.
"We wanted to give University of Derby graduates an extra edge when entering the jobs market and the reaction to our Graduate Destinations project, a training package put together just for them, has been very positive."
The new measure is in addition to the usual work of the Career Development Centre.
In the last academic year 2010/2011 the Centre helped 3,612 customers - more than a fifth of those people who'd never used its services before - on the path to the right career or job.
As well as the Graduate Destinations initiative mentioned above the centre offers:
- trained careers advisers
- guidance interviews
- help with completing application forms
- job search support
- help finding work placements to build an impressive CV
- guidance on becoming self-employed and setting up your own business
- careers fairs.
Once University of Derby students have completed their degree course and left they are still welcome to call the Career Development Centre for advice, and come in and see its staff or make online enquiries.
The Career Development Centre is open 9am to 5pm Monday to Thursday, and 9.30am to 4.30pm Fridays. For more information call the centre on 01332 591316, or email: careers@derby.ac.uk, or see its website at www.derby.ac.uk/careers
