The store in the Westfield Centre showcasing work of University of Derby final year fashion students' 2010 Degree Show

It's fitting that we have linked with the fashion course at the University and we're really excited to be able to showcase some of the beautiful designs from this year's show in the centre.

Fashion students about to leave the University of Derby won't have to wait until they get into the industry to see their work in a prime location.

For the first time the University's fashion students have been given a prominent store front at Westfield Derby shopping centre (on Level One, near the Concierge desk) in which to advertise their forthcoming annual Degree Show.

More than 300 original designs by students leaving the University's BA (Hons) Fashion Studies degree course will go down the catwalk in two glittering shows to be staged in the Great Hall at the Derby Assembly Rooms, Derby city centre, at 1.30pm and 7.30pm on Friday June 4. Men's and women's wear will be included.

The Westfield Derby shop front - kindly donated by the company - shows examples of fashion students' clothes designs, a film of the 2009 Degree Show on permanent loop and gives information about this year's event.

Music for the 2010 show will be provided by Andy McAllister, a top DJ and owner of the Ground Level Breaks music label.

Tickets for the fashion event are now available. Standard tickets for the afternoon show cost £3, and for the 7.30pm event£10 and £5 concessions.

A VIP ticket - at a cost of £15 - offers priority seating, entry to a champagne and chocolates reception, and an exclusive viewing of students' portfolios.

VIP ticket holders will also be entered into a prize draw with the chance to win top prizes such as train and hotel tickets, a Paul Smith bag worth £1,400, a year's Quad cinema subscription and vouchers to spend in Westfield Derby.

There will also be a prize for the Best Student Portfolio, judged by a senior figure from retailer Paul Smith.

Fiona Hawthorne, joint Programme Leader for Fashion, said: 'It's going to be a great event. The students have worked tirelessly on their final collections and static displays."

Helen Culver, 23, originally of Coalville, Leicestershire, is one of the students presenting her work at this year's fashion event.

During her time at Derby she has had work placements with BC International and George at Asda, and was awarded the River Island 'Re-styling' category prize connected with the annual Graduate Fashion Week. After her degree she will be working as a Garment Technologist for Brands Inc, a subsidiary of national retail chain Sports Direct.

Helen said: "I've enjoyed my time at Derby a lot. The course is good because it lets you do more than just design.

"I also was given the chance to do my Diploma in Professional Practice between the second and third years, which gives you a year's work experience in the industry. I doubt I'd have got the job I have without that."
