A limited number of free training places in hairdressing, catering, plastering and forklift-truck driving have just opened up at Buxton College, part of the University of Derby Buxton, for the long-term unemployed.

And if the experience of current student Cassandra Charlton is anything to go by, the experience can turn people's lives around.

For Cassandra, 23, from Fairfield in Buxton, a training placement in hairdressing has been an opportunity for a fresh start and a brighter future.

"Although I've always been interested in hairdressing I left school without any GCSEs and so never thought I'd be able to get into it," Cassandra said. "I started on the NVQ Level One at Buxton after the job centre referred me here last year, and although I was a bit worried about going to college to start with it's been brilliant."

The training placement was Cassandra's first taste of education since leaving school, she added. "I've almost finished my NVQ Level One in hairdressing now, and have got lots of experience with customers through working in the salon with real customers at Buxton.

"I'd definitely tell people to try and get onto one of these placements if they can, as I feel like I've got a future in hairdressing now, which is something I didn't think I'd ever have."

There are under 100 training places available on a variety of courses including welding, plastering, hairdressing, food hygiene and forklift-truck driving.

Adults aged 19 to 65 who have been claiming job seeker's allowance for at least six months can apply.  Anyone interested should ask at the job centre, call 01298 28321, or email enquiriesudb@derby.ac.uk
