People looking to develop new skills in film, photography, broadcast journalism or web design can now get free training at the University of Derby.

The Creative Exchange - a training centre accredited by Apple and Adobe, run at the University's Markeaton Street site in Derby - has secured £180,000 funding from Derby City Partnership, in partnership with the East Midlands Development Agency (emda), to boost creative skills in the region.

Under this scheme, artists and designers resident in Derby will be able to explore and develop their skills in a range of different digital media. They can improve their digital media skills through two-day classes, delivered by creative industry professionals.

The sessions, which are available to book now, include:

  • film making
  • digital photography
  • radio presentation and broadcasting
  • web design
  • graphic design
  • Mac for PC users and an introduction to iLife.

In addition Creative Exchange is also running free 'taster' sessions and longer courses specifically to help unemployed people towards new careers in film, photography, broadcast journalism or web design.

This is being funded through the Economic Challenge Investment Fund (ECIF), a Government initiative to help universities aid individuals and businesses affected by the economic downturn.

Courses are available in film making and video camera skills, photography and Photoshop, radio presentation and broadcasting, web design and digital illustration.

Matt Jones, from the Creative Exchange, said: "Often when someone is out of work or loses their job, they reassess their career direction. These free taster sessions give unemployed people a no cost, no risk way to try different creative options and see if they like them".

For further details about either the free taster sessions, or longer film making and photography courses that are also available, see the Creative Exchange's website at www.derby.ac.uk/creative-exchange or call the Centre on 01332 593114.
