While many residents and visitors were enjoying the sunshine and music at the Y Not Festival in the Peak District National Park last weekend (July 30 - August 1), Events students from the University of Derby Buxton were gaining valuable work experience in stewarding and event safety.
The Y Not Festival is an intimate music festival that takes place in the stunning location of Pikehall in the Peak District National Park every year. As in previous years, students on the BA (Hons) Events Management degree course at the University of Derby Buxton volunteered at the event in a number of vital roles.
Hannah Smith, 20, acted as Assistant Area Manager for arena volunteers while Matthew Leese, 20; Samantha Osborne, 19; and Cat Lee, 18; were Stewards. They carried out important tasks including ticket and wristband control, car park and campsite attending and helped out backstage to ensure the festival ran smoothly.
The student volunteers were also given formal training (the NCFE Level 2 Award in Understanding Stewarding at Spectator Events) which gave them an introduction to the role of a Steward, and developed their knowledge and understanding of spectator control.
Hannah Smith said: "Experience is very important when it comes to working in events management, and so working in this role at the Y Not Festival was a fantastic opportunity. I wouldn't have been able to do the role as well or as confidently without the theory I've learned during my studies. It was fantastic to put it all into practice."
Victoria Moore, Facilitator for the Events Management course at the University of Derby Buxton, said: "By volunteering at this important local event, our students have gained real life experience of the field they're studying, which has built on their classroom learning."
