'Family Fun Day' Brings Local Community Together
26 April 2012
Families and the local community can go for 'gold' in a sports themed fun day at the University of Derby.
The free 'Family Fun Day', being held on Sunday 6 May from 12-4 pm at the University's Kedleston Road site, forms part of the city's torch relay celebrations.
Visitors to the event will be able to get a feel for what the world's sporting stars have to look forward to by taking part in a series of sport 'taster' sessions.
Hosted by Team Derby, these include a three bow archery challenge, football penalty shoot out, basketball hoop shoot and a 500m speed row. There will also be a 10 metre climbing wall and 75ft inflatable assault course that both adults and children can try out.
Those who prefer a spot on the sidelines to working up a sweat can enjoy a licensed bar and BBQ, whilst meeting Derby County Football Club's Rammie and Derbyshire County Cricket Club's Freddie the Falcon, who will both be making a special guest appearance.
Ollie Shearer, Sports Development Manager for the University of Derby, said: "As part of our celebrations of this summer's big sporting event, and to mark the torch coming to the city, we wanted to bring the local community together by opening up the University and sharing our fantastic facilities with them.
"It promises to be a fun packed afternoon with plenty of activities taking place that are sure to keep the whole family entertained. Let's just hope the weather improves for then!"
To add a competitive edge to the event those completing all sport taster sessions on the day will be entered into a free prize draw. Here they'll be in with a chance of winning prizes donated by local organisations including Derby County Football Club, Derby Theatre, QUAD, ASK Italian and Derbyshire County Cricket Club.
