Apprenticeships at Buxton College

National Apprenticeship Week- 6-10 February at Buxton College.

As part of National Apprenticeship Week, ( 6-10 February), Buxton College, which is part of the University of Derby Buxton, has a packed calendar of open events that highlight opportunities for future apprentices and local employers.

The free events, taking place at the Buxton College campus, in the town's iconic Devonshire Dome, from Monday 6 to Wednesday 8 February will celebrate the talents and skills of their current apprentices, and showcase the excellent and unique opportunities apprenticeships offer young people and local businesses.

Throughout 6 February, ex-apprentices of Buxton College, now forging their careers in hairdressing, will be taking part in a hair styling competition, and at 12pm hospitality apprentices will demonstrate their culinary skills to their employers and special guests in the Dome Fine Dining Restaurant.

On Wednesday 8 February, apprentices in Health and Social Care, Education and Childcare will be on hand throughout the day to talk about their experiences of apprenticeships to visitors. Then from 6pm young people interested in becoming an apprentice can come along to an information evening, where employers can also find out more about grants of £2,500 of support they could access.

Mary Blauciak, Head of Buxton College, said: "If you're looking to leave school and become an apprentice this is your ideal opportunity to find out everything you need to know about how you could be earning a salary while you learn and achieve a valuable qualification.

"We will also be using the week to launching our 100 campaign. Where we aim to recruit 100 apprentices in 100 days. Giving them the chance to gain their first step on the employment ladder, supporting them in education and a lifelong career."

Buxton College offers apprenticeship training in Customer Service, Childcare, Health and Social Care, Hairdressing, Hospitality and Catering, Motor Vehicle, Engineering and Bakery.

Mary Blauciak continued: "If you are interested in pursuing a career in any of these or other areas, then an apprenticeship could be the start you need. You can find out more by talking to current apprentices and employers at these open events."

Karen Woodward, Divisional Apprenticeship Director at the National Apprenticeship Service, said "It's impressive to see the inspirational and creative activity being planned by Buxton College to promote National Apprenticeship Week and the programme. This week is not only to celebrate success and achievement of apprentices, but also to showcase that an apprenticeship offers a great career pathway."

If you are aged 25 or under, you can apply for an apprenticeship, and your training is free. Your employer will pay your wages. An apprentice usually works four days of the week and goes into college, like Buxton, for one day a week to gain a nationally recognised vocational qualification. You'll earn a wage of £95 a week (minimum) and gain valuable practical skills that you'll need for your chosen field of work.
