Evening Forges Future Career Opportunities

Local and national employers in the hospitality industry were invited to enjoy an evening of excellent food and entertainment in the Dome Fine Dining Restaurant courtesy of University of Derby Buxton Hospitality Management students.
Fourteen guests were welcomed to the 'Meet the Industry' event, including Marilyn Hobson from Skibo Castle, in the Highlands of Scotland, Alan Hobson from Derbyshire Smokery, Flagg, Peter Dale from The Dining Room, Ashbourne, and Rikkie Shepherd from YHA Commercial. They were treated to a three course fine dining meal prepared and served by BA (Hons) Hospitality Management and Culinary Arts students, and met with some of the current students.
Ben Offord, the University's Work Placement Officer, said: "This was an opportunity for students to showcase their skills and to secure high profile work placement opportunities in the hospitality industry. These experiences are increasingly important for them once they graduate.
"The evening was also a useful chance for the University to strengthen its links with employers, who we may be able to develop research and marketing projects with in the future."
Ray Hoerty, from The Institute of Tourist Guiding, said: "The meal was excellent, matched by the service. The students did the University proud."
Rikki Shepherd from the Youth Hostel Association added: "It was useful to find out what students are looking for in potential employers. It was also nice to spread the word about what the YHA has to offer in terms of employment opportunities."
Peter Dale from The Dining Room, Ashbourne, said: "It was a pleasure to meet the students and I have offered them the opportunity to come and work with me at any time."
The event was held at the University of Derby Buxton's Dome Fine Dining Restaurant on February 23.
