Education Fuels Graduate's Search For Natural Resources
3 February 2012
A University of Derby graduate who is carving out a successful career in geology was invited to speak to a group of UK students about his specialist subject at the London Petrophysical Society's Annual University Open Day on 1 February.
Simon Greenfield, 25, who studied an undergraduate degree in Geology and is currently working towards a Masters degree in Applied Petroleum Geosciences at Derby, spoke to around 115 students from Manchester, Leeds, Derby and Leicester about his role at Kirk Petrophysics at the open day, which was held at the University of Derby.
Simon, from Barnsley but now living in Guildford, Surrey, gave the audience an insight into the core analysis work he has been doing at Kirk. His role has already included trips to Ghana, Poland, Luxembourg and Tanzania, where he supervised the retrieval of core samples from off-shore rigs.
Simon said: "It was great to be invited back to speak to students about my new role - and to share my experiences of work so far.
"The job is exactly what I was hoping to do. It involves analysing samples taken from subsurface hydrocarbon reservoirs from various locations around the world, looking for evidence of the environments the reservoirs were laid down in and making predictions about reservoir architecture and morphology, which is in turn used in part to help calculate reserves.
"My geology and postgraduate degrees have prepared me really well for this role and I was really happy to take this opportunity to share my enthusiasm with current students."
Dorothy Satterfield, Senior Lecturer in Petroleum Geology at the University of Derby, said: "We were delighted to be asked to hold the event on behalf of the London Petrophysical Society, and it was fantastic to have Simon here representing the University. That he is doing so well in the world of work, applying all that he learned in his studies, is great to see."
There were also talks on the day from the President of the London Petrophysical Society, Mike Millar from BG, Mike Lovell from the University of Leicester, Peter Fitch from Imperial College London, Tom Graham from BP, and John Bennett of Perenco.
