Far East will meet East Midlands when cutting edge University of Derby research is showcased at a regional technology event for Japanese investors.

The JETRO (Japan External Trade Organisation) Technology Showcase 2010, at Loughborough University on  Thursday 25 November, aims to foster collaborations between Japanese businesses, and East Midlands' universities and companies.

University academics will have a chance to explain their ideas - particularly in tackling 'green' subjects such as reducing carbon emissions, and producing alternative and sustainable power sources - to companies which could make them a reality through investment and partnership.

The University of Derby's academics will be presenting projects on:

  • the potential uses for a computer package which turns two-dimensional architects' plans into a 3D design you can 'walk' through

  • a wireless electronic monitoring system which could detect environmental factors harmful to human health, and assess the level of danger they present

  • the updating of older properties to meet modern environmental standards.

Attending the showcase event will be representatives of the Japanese government's trade organisation. Advanced Composites Group of Heanor and Carbon Sequestration Ltd of Watnall will be among the regional companies present; along with members of the East Midlands Development Agency, and UK Trade and Investment (East Midlands).

Harold Convey, Innovation and Knowledge Transfer Manager at the University of Derby, said: "The School of Technology in the University's Faculty of Arts, Design and Technology will be taking some very interesting projects to this event.

"I am optimistic that we can attract the investment we need to get them off the ground."

The JETRO Technology Showcase 2010 event is supported by the East Midlands Innovation Transport iNet group, the East Midlands Development Agency (EMDA), UK Trade and Investment, BusinessLink Japan and is part financed by the European Union.

David Wallace is International Director at EMDA, which supports international trade and investment in the region.

He said: "There are already many excellent examples of innovative collaborations between businesses in the East Midlands and Japan; such as Intelligent Energy in Loughborough, which is developing a fuel cell with Suzuki, and EMINATE in Nottingham, which is helping Honda Trading to launch a food supplement to tackle bone disease.

"I am sure that this event will enable exciting new partnerships to be forged between businesses and universities in both countries."
