Martial Arts

A martial arts event held at the University of Derby Buxton Campus..

Martial arts enthusiasts have the opportunity to learn about and try out seven traditional Japanese martial arts at a weekend workshop being held at the University of Derby's Buxton Campus this weekend (17 - 18 September 2011).

The traditional Japanese Budo (Martial Arts) workshop, which has been organised by the University's Sports Programme Leader and Martial Arts expert, Charles Spring, will be held in Buxton's Dome.

Seven separate traditional Budo will be taught over the weekend; including Aikido, Iaido (sword drawing), Judo, JuJitsudo, Karatedo, Kendo and Kobudo (old martial ways). The event will be opened by a traditional display of Japanese archery and a full array of Japanese Samurai armour will be on display over the weekend.

The event is open to martial arts enthusiasts and traditional Japanese Budo practitioners of all grades and styles over the age of 16. Anyone wanting to come along and take part are being urged to book a place. To book, or for information about fees please contact David Ansell on 07932 528423 or David Passmore on 07714 146889.

Participants will be encouraged to gain some experience of a Budo outside of their own speciality, and, in order to accommodate this, all techniques taught over the two days will be of a very basic standard so that all may enjoy them at a beginner level.

Charles Spring said: "This is a fantastic opportunity for people to gain an insight into these martial arts and participate in an art they may have never tried before. It will also be a great opportunity to train with some highly respected instructors from different Japanese Budo.

Another of the event's organisers, Sensei David Ansell, said: "This is the first time we have organised an open event like this where people who are not members of a martial arts organisation can enjoy the beauty and skill of these ancient arts."
