The University of Derby and NHS Derbyshire County have announced a new training partnership to empower senior healthcare professionals in a swift response to issues outlined in the new healthcare White Paper.
Last month Health Secretary Andrew Lansley unveiled the new White Paper, aiming to revolutionise public healthcare in the UK. 'Equity and excellence: Liberating the NHS' seeks to make the NHS more accountable to patients.
GPs, senior nurses, occupational therapists and other healthcare managers are being invited under the Government proposals to have a greater say in the way healthcare services are commissioned and distributed in their local neighbourhoods.
GP practices would join forces to manage multi-million pound budgets, with an independent NHS Commissioning Board overseeing the new regime, and local councils taking over the public health element of the work of Primary Care Trusts.
The University has teamed up with NHS Derbyshire County to lay on two Clinical Commissioning Development Programme workshops. These will form part of a larger schedule of the training programme. It is among the first such training collaborations to be announced nationally since the White Paper was unveiled.
Set for November and January, the learning programme will be aimed at healthcare professionals in Derbyshire and will build participants' knowledge in finance, contract negotiations and business case development.
Organisers hope the workshops can help healthcare professionals make the tough decisions related to the fair and most effective distribution of resources in areas including the care of the elderly, healthy living initiatives and acute hospital procedures - in challenging economic times.
The workshops will be held at the University's Enterprise Centre, in Bridge Street, Derby. The programme will be validated to postgraduate level with successful participants gaining 30 credits.
Dr Katie Cuthbert, University of Derby Principal Tutor within the Faculty of Education, Health and Sciences, said: "The Government announcement is set to signal major changes for the healthcare sector. We are pleased to be working with NHS Derbyshire County to create these unique training opportunities.
"The White Paper recommends senior clinicians take charge of budgets and commissioning services in their local neighbourhoods.
"Such health professionals will find themselves with a greater say in their community's health - not just that of the individuals they treat. These training courses will empower them with the proposed commissioning changes ahead."
Maggie Boyd, Director of Clinical Quality and Nursing at NHS Derbyshire County, said: "The recent White Paper gives a unique opportunity for clinicians to lead commissioning. This new programme will give senior clinical leaders an opportunity to learn and build their skills and confidence."
