Derby Students Experience European Lecture
10 November 2011
Geology students at the University of Derby were some of the first in Europe to hear from Geo-science experts as an international lecture series at Derby earlier this week, 9 November.
As part of the European Association of Geologists and Engineers (EAGE) Student Lecture Tour, Ed Hough from the British Geological Survey spoke to around a hundred gathered BSc (Hons) Geology degree students and MSc (Masters) Applied Petroleum Geoscience students about shale gas exploration (the natural gas produced by shale) at the University's Courtroom.
Ed Hough is the District Geologist for north-west England, and has worked for the British Geological Survey as a multi-disciplinary geologist for over a decade. He has mapped several coal basins and areas of shale gas potential, and worked in a consultative capacity on gas exploration and storage projects across Europe.
Dr Dorothy Satterfield, Senior Lecturer in Petroleum Geology, said: "We were delighted to have been chosen by the EAGE to host a lecture again this year as it recognises the strength of our Geology programmes.
"With reports last week that minor tremors have happened in the Blackpool area as a result of shale gas exploration, students were keen to find out the pros and cons of exploiting this potentially significant energy resource. They certainly learned a lot."
It was the second time that the EAGE has visited the University of Derby and the Derby lecture was the second stop on the European leg of the International Student Lecture Series, which also takes in Germany, Oman and North Africa.
