Derby Graduate Artists First Collaboration
19 August 2009
An empty shop in Derby's centre will be transformed into a fantastical Alice in Wonderland style scene, thanks to the skills of an all female art group.
Glowing chess boards, giant jigsaws and dozens of transparent trees suspended from the ceiling will be installed at the shop-(See Note* 30 Market Place), as part of a free art exhibition called Izon by a group of University of Derby graduates calling themselves horizontal.
The intriguing artworks - on display from the beginning of the Feste Weekend (September 4-6) and until Sunday 13 September - owe a lot to science.
horizontal member Saira Lloyd has a scientific background in Genetics and her fellow artist Joanna Geldard used laser cutting techniques, usually associated with the engineering industry, to create her exhibition pieces. Both are graduates of the University's MA (Masters) ADAPT course, covering art, design and theory.
Colleague Angela Pressley, is interested in memory and recollection, and expresses this with her 3D wire sculpture mounted on a wooden pallet.
Anna Mawby's work is an interactive installation of around forty five transparent trees suspended from the ceiling. The trees and their shadows spring to life when light is shone on to them in the form of a hand held torch. Anna and Angela both graduated with a First in Fine Art. All the women graduated from the University of Derby in 2007.
Help with the design of their exhibition has come from BA (Hons) Visual Communication (Graphic Design) third year student at the University of Derby, Craig Lindley.
Joanna Geldard said: "We're delighted to be working together as a collective group of women as it's rare women collaborate in the arts world."
Anna Mawby added: "We all found the University to be really supportive of our work. For example through support of my tutors I have exhibited internationally in Italy and have an internship coming up in Macedonia."
The group have been supported by the University of Derby, dèda and Derby City Council.
Izon will be on display at 30 Market Place*, Derby during the Feste weekend, 4 - 6 September and will run until 13th September, open from 6pm to 9pm. Find out more at www.horizontal-art.com
