Richard Limb, President of the National Outdoor Events Association

Events Management at the University of Derby Buxton has won a top award for Training In Events at the 2007 National Outdoor Events Association Convention at Chateau Impney, Droitwich Spa, Worcestershire.

Richard Limb, the Association’s President, said: “This award is presented to an individual or organisation recognised for their excellence and skills in providing training within the outdoor events industry. Their enthusiasm, professionalism, competence and dedication was obvious and indeed overwhelming.

“My experience of working on the MA Events Management course at the University of Derby is limited, but I was so impressed that I nominated the team for the National Outdoor Events Association Training Tribute.”

The award recognises the development that has gone into Derby’s Master’s programme in Events Management and pays tribute to the quality of the suite of Events Management courses which form an integral part of the School of Culture and Lifestyle at Derby’s stunning Devonshire Campus in Buxton.

Programme Leader Conor Moss said: “The award is very welcome as one of the main aims of our Events Management programmes is to produce graduates who are demonstrably employable once they graduate. This represents great recognition from the events industry that we are achieving those aims.”

The MA Events Management attracted Joanne Lambert-Barnes, who was keen to develop her career: “I worked as a PA in Milan, but wanted a career change and to come back to the English countryside. The part of my job I loved was organising company conferences, so I looked for Master’s in Events and found this course.

“It was important to me to live somewhere rural, so Buxton was the perfect choice. The course has made me realise that there are so many possibilities that I hadn’t thought of, so I’m looking forward to getting out there and finding my own direction.  My ultimate goal is to set up my own business.”

Buxton offers Master’s courses in Events Management, International Hospitality Management, Strategic Sports Management, and Tourism Management.  You can also undertake Doctoral study.

On 23 March, staff and students at Buxton will host industry representatives at The Student Events Conference 2007. Organised by Events Management students, for Events Management students, it is an opportunity to listen, converse and network with some of the UK’s leading and most forward thinking event organizers.

Confirmed speakers at the Conference will include: Trevor Foley from the Event Industry Alliance; Steve Heap, Director of FolkArts England; and Chris Parnham, a Director of Zibrant Events.
