A long-standing partnership between Swiss and University of Derby educators marked a milestone as they celebrated their tenth year of graduates.

The University of Derby and the Swiss Hotel Management School (SHMS), part of the Swiss Education Group, have worked together to run vocational higher education courses since 1998. The link with Derby’s Buxton site pre-dates the current Devonshire Campus (opened in 2006), to when it was the subject area of Tourism and Hospitality Management under The Derbyshire Business School.

Programmes currently delivered at SHMS’s campuses in Leysin, and elsewhere in Switzerland, in association with the University of Derby Buxton, include:

The tenth anniversary of the Derby-Switzerland connection was marked last weekend (June 6-7), as over 200 graduates in those subjects accepted their honours.

Professor John Coyne, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Derby and other senior members were present at the ceremonies held in Leysin and Caux.

He said: “I was very proud to attend the graduation in Switzerland which marked a decade of international co-operation between ourselves and the Swiss Hotel Management School.

“From that first link ten years ago we have seen our graduates go on to work in, and develop their careers at, some of the finest tourist spots, restaurants and events venues in the world. We continue to look at ways of developing the variety of courses we offer, through our partnership.”

Emanuel Donhauser – Executive Academic Director at the Swiss Education Group, parent company of the Swiss Hotel Management School – added: “It is inspiring to see the fruit of our academic partnership with the University of Derby in our graduates, as they move on out into the hospitality industry.

“Their prolific careers give testament to the fact that the combination, of high quality academic input and practical immersion in a service environment, works.”
