Competition To Ignite Local Creativity
6 October 2010
This year's competition has the theme 'Fire'
Organisers of Buxton Poetry Competition are celebrating National Poetry Day today (7 October) by launching their 2011 competition. And they're hoping that this year's theme - fire - ignites the creative spark in local poets.
The University of Derby Buxton and the Buxton Festival are looking forward to receiving poems inspired by this year's theme from poets of all ages, who will be in the running for the top prize of £300 - announced in July 2011.
They are delighted to welcome back judges Ann and Peter Sansom as well as patrons Sir Andrew Motion and Lady Jasmine Cavendish.
Competition organiser Claire Rhodes comments: 'We hope people of all ages and levels of experience will have a go at writing a poem for our 2011 competition.
"We're sure our unusual theme of 'fire' will inspire you to pick up a pen. There are so many ways this theme could be interpreted. Your poem could look at the destructive nature of fire, how fire is used in industry, how fire helps us celebrate or keeps us warm through the winter.
"While the competition is national and poems don't have to be about Buxton, it would be great to have a local winner this year - so get writing!'
The competition culminates in a unique exhibition at the University of Derby's Devonshire Dome throughout Buxton Festival 2011.
If you've now got 'fire in your belly' to put pen to paper, call 01298 70395 or email claire@buxtonfestival.co.uk for an entry pack. The deadline for entries is April 1 2011.
