School children will be able to watch demonstrations and even have a go at martial arts at the event to celebrate the Torch Relay passing through Buxton.

By inviting children into the Dome and getting them to have a go at a new sport we are ensuring the excitement of the Torch Relay leaves a lasting legacy with these children.

More than 250 children will celebrate day 42 of the Torch Relay as it passes through Buxton by having a go at a host of new sports at the University's Buxton Campus.

On Friday June 29, the Olympic Torch travels from Nottingham to Derby through the High Peak and Buxton town centre. To share in the spirit of the once-in-a-lifetime event, children from schools across the High Peak have been invited to enjoy some new sports under the famous Domed roof of one of the country's most iconic buildings.

The event at the Devonshire Dome, home to the University of Derby Buxton and Buxton College, will be opened at 12.45pm by Buxton Torch Bearer, and founder of the famous Buxton Billerettes, Bill Weston MBE.

Between 1 and 3pm, 250 children from local schools across Buxton and the High Peak including St Luke's Primary School, St Mary's Primary School, Buxton Junior School and Whaley Bridge Primary school will be trying their hands, and feet, at sports including trampolining, gymnastics, martial arts, athletics, hockey and handball.

The taster sessions will be led by students of the University of Derby Buxton and Buxton College, and local clubs; Glossop Gymnastics Club, High Peak Trampolining and Rebound Therapy Club, Buxton Hockey Club, Buxton Athletics Club and Buxton Swimming and Fitness Centre.

Dr Peter Dewhurst, Dean of the University of Derby Buxton, said: "We are incredibly excited to be playing a big part in such an incredible day. By inviting children into the Dome and getting them to have a go at a new sport we are ensuring the excitement of the Torch Relay leaves a lasting legacy with these children."

Members of the University's dedicated commercial event management business, Dome Events, will also be playing a large role in the day as they support High Peak Borough Council with the organisation, logistics and running of the Torch Relay itself through the town.
