Charity Appeal Gets Off To A Great Start

2 March 2011

University of Derby Buxton students hoping to raise £4,000 for an African village have made great steps towards their fundraising goal with a charity auction.

£1,271 was raised for the charity Village Aid from the auction of 51 donated items. They were helped by local celebrity auctioneer Charles Hanson, who gave up his time to host the event and up the bidding.

Lots were donated by generous local people and businesses and included: Afternoon tea with the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, a Derby County FC football signed by Nigel Clough and first team players, a tour of the Royal Crown Derby factory including the Titanic Exhibition, and an original piece of artwork by a local artist.

The pass for four people to Chatsworth House with afternoon tea with the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire went for a bid of £150. Prior to the auction, lots of interest had been shown in a half-day tour around Derbyshire on the back of a Harley Davidson. This eventually went for a bid of £100.

The signed Derby County FC Football sold for a fantastic £70.

The money will go to the students' chosen charity, Village Aid, who will give a village in the Gambia access to their own supply of fresh water.

Well done to all of the students who organised the event, and raised such a fantastic amount.
