Commercial photography graduates - now owners of Cactus Images Photography Agency.

When consumers shop online they are only able to use one of their 5 senses, sight. You have to show them that your bread is the freshest around, your jewellery dazzles from all angles. Your pictures need to tell a story, to draw the consumer to the buy

Not ones to prioritise paying off their tuition fees recent University of Derby commercial photography graduates Jackie Rock, Chris Howard and Angela Jenkins formed Cactus Images photographic agency in 2008.

They knew the fast moving world of commercial photography was a tough business. But always ready for a challenge the trio put their heads together and decided to give it their best shot.

They searched Derby for a perfect location and found Banks Mill, the University of Derby run business incubation unit, which provides support and training as well as studio space for new businesses in the creative industries.

With exposed brick walls, good natural light and space to move around in, Cactus were convinced and became tenants in 2008 turning their 315 square foot space into a full, state of the art digital photography studio.

Angela Jenkins said "we knew that in the current climate businesses were having to look at ways to boost sales and widen their distribution channels to stay afloat, with more and more businesses developing on-line sales facilities and using auction sites to sell further afield we saw our opportunity".

Cactus's rational is supported by the latest IMRG Cap Gemini e-Retail Sales Index research. This shows that the UK online sales market has enjoyed year-on-year growth of 16.8 per cent. Web sales were up 15.7 per cent in July 2009 on the previous month, as revenue of £4.2 billion was generated over the internet.

Jackie added "we believe that the time told idiom 'A picture is worth a thousand words' holds true and product images are critical for success, especially with online sales; showing clear, attractive pictures of your products converts visitors into customers.

"When consumers shop online they are only able to use one of their 5 senses, sight. You have to show them that your bread is the freshest around, your jewellery dazzles from all angles. Your pictures need to tell a story, to draw the consumer to the buy."

Chris Howard, the partner responsible for the technical side of the business said "Product photos should be clear, appropriately lit and white balanced. We pride ourselves on making sure every image is as good as it can be. We use technology to help get this right."

Cactus has completed a number of commissions for Derby businesses over the past year including Lastolite, Virgin Active and Natalie Harris Jewellery. Since graduating 3 months ago Cactus has focused their efforts on a broader client base and have secured commissions for regional and national clients, including Littleover Apiaries and Goldman Sachs.

Cactus's clients agree money spent on professional photography is a good investment that will pay back.
