Buxton Workshops Dedicated To International Student Experience

The Buxton Faculty recently welcomed guests from the Higher Education Academy (HEA), who hosted a day of workshops for staff on 'Supporting international students through an integrated approach.'
Forty-five members of academic and support staff attended the event on May 10, where they discussed topics including: 'academic support outside the classroom', 'teaching and learning strategies, and 'staff development'.
Delegates were involved in a cross-cultural communication simulation game and a session on teaching and learning strategies. They heard from speakers including the University of Derby Buxton's own Isobel Stockdale, Yukari Iguchi, and Dr John Butcher, as well as a guest lecture from Dr Dave Burnapp of the University of Northampton.
Two of the University's international students, Fannice Maloba from Kenya, and Chih-Hua 'Jack' Cheng from Taiwan, who are both studying towards a Masters degree in International Hospitality Managementspoke to the gathered delegates about their experiences to close the day.
Mikaela Balder, the Faculty's International Student Advisor, said: "As more and more international students are choosing to come and study in Buxton, it is vital that we prepare our teaching and support mechanisms for people from many different cultures.
"Feedback from the workshop from the HEA has been fantastic, and we shall all be incorporating what we learned when working with the 94 international students from 29 countries we currently have studying with us here in Buxton."
Two of the University's degree students,Christine Walker and Lilla Madacsi, helped Senior Lecturer in Hospitality Management, Yukari Iguchi, and International Student Advisor, Mikaela Balder, to organise the well-attended event.
