Students from the University of Derby Buxton have completed a gruelling 24-hour fitness challenge in the Dome, and are hoping to have raised over £2,000 for the charity Help for Heroes.
During the 24-hour challenge on May 20 2010, 100 students from the University's Uniformed Public Services and Sports BTEC National Diplomas ran, cycled and rowed a total of 1858 miles - all without leaving the magnificent Dome, the centrepiece of the University's Buxton Campus.
The fundraisers took four-hour shifts, rowing and cycling on stationary machines and running around the Dome, keeping up continuous activity for the full 24-hour period.
Richard Robinson, Lecturer on the Uniformed Public Services course, said: "The students did fantastically well over the challenge, keeping up the momentum to last the whole 24 hours and notching up 1,858 miles overall, 78 more miles than last year.
Luke Randles, a 17-year old Uniformed Public Services student said: "It's been a really challenging event as we've had to cope with sleep deprivation and physical tiredness, but it's been fun and definitely worth it."
Katie Battye, 17, who hopes to join the police force, said: "We've raised money for a really good cause, and although it's been hard I think it will help prepare me for some of the challenges I'll face in my career."
