For me, competing is all about focusing on certain skills and making sure I'm at the top of my game. It is important to test and push yourself in this industry, and by competing and doing well I hope this spurs my students on to do the same.

The University of Derby Buxton is proud to announce that its Chef Lecturer, Robert Stordy, has been crowned University Chef of the Year 2012 by the University Caterers Organisation (TUCO).
Robert, who lectures on the University's BA (Hons) Professional Culinary Arts degree, was awarded Gold at the Knorr/TUCO annual chef challenge held in Blackpool on March 26, where the very best professionals in university catering competed for some top awards.
This prestigious title adds to Robert's already numerous industry accolades, which include winning the Galbani Taste of Italy Competition, British Turkey Chef of the Year as well as places in the finals of the Linda McCartney Meat Free competition and Bramley Diamond Dishes Competition in the last year.
Robert said: "Being crowned University Chef of the Year feels fantastic. For me, competing is all about focusing on certain skills and making sure I'm at the top of my game. It is important to test and push yourself in this industry, and by competing and doing well I hope this spurs my students on to do the same."
Dean of the University of Derby Buxton, Dr Peter Dewhurst, said: "We are delighted that we can say we have the University Chef of the Year 2012 lecturing on our Professional Culinary Arts degrees. This is a fantastic achievement for Robert, and we know that his accomplishments will inspire our students to strive to be the best in their chosen fields."
On degrees in professional culinary arts, students develop their understanding of food production, food from around the world, the history of food and a range of culinary arts. They also learn the business skills they need for working at supervisory levels in a professional environment.
