Brass Bands And Better Health Key Notes Of Buxton Update
5 February 2008
High notes and weighty health issues will be among the issues tackled during a presentation on the year ahead for the University of Derby’s Devonshire Campus in Buxton.
Professor David Gray, Dean of the University of Derby Buxton; Dennis Smith, its Head of Further Education, and Dr Peter Dewhurst, Head of the School of Culture and Lifestyle, will be revealing what’s in store for the campus during a presentation at the Lecture Theatre in the Dome from 5pm on Wednesday February 13. Entry to the event is free.
A ‘Healthy Lifestyle and Wellness Centre’ is set to be established at the campus - in collaboration with the University’s Faculty of Education, Health and Sciences - by the autumn.
The centre will take a holistic view of health, looking at how treatment of the whole person can help relieve a range of ailments. Its activities will include running short courses for the public on subjects such as tackling obesity and on complementary therapies.
It is hoped to run these health related courses as part of the campus’s Summer University, alongside ones on other subjects such as the literary activities tied into the annual Buxton Festival.
The February 13 presentation will also cover the successes of The Devonshire Spa, a training facility for students at the University of Derby Buxton site which provides treatments for the public. Staff will find out in March if it has been named ‘Day Spa Of The Year’ in the 2008 Professional Beauty magazine annual awards.
Professor Gray, a musician himself, is also very pleased by the University’s sponsorship of Chapel-en-le-Frith Town Band, based just north of Buxton.
The University announced last November that it would be donating an initial £1,500 to fund the band’s appearances and projects for 12 months, including its educational project Cool2playbrass promoting the playing of brass instruments. The figure will be reviewed in subsequent years.
Commenting on the forthcoming public update, Professor Gray said: “This is an opportunity for myself and senior staff to let the public in on some of the exciting things coming up for the Devonshire Campus in Buxton over the next 12 months.
“As a University campus based at the heart of Buxton it’s important we keep our neighbours up to date with how we’re involving ourselves in the local community.”
The talk on February 13 is part of the current series of Devonshire Lectures, covering a wide range of topics, held regularly at the Devonshire Campus. To book a place at an event contact Liz Mackenzie on 01332 594627 or email l.mackenzie@derby.ac.uk.
