Book Launch For Education Experts
10 October 2011
Experts in children's behaviour have launched their new collaborative book, entitled A Quick Guide to Behaviour Management in the Early Years, at the University of Derby.
University of Derby education academics and lecturers on its Foundation Degree (FdA) in Children's and Young People's Services, Dr Simon Brownhill and Helen Wilson, together with Emily Bullock, a teacher based in Hong Kong and guest lecturer at Derby, have written a new book to give teachers and education practitioners new ways to improve children's behaviour in the classroom.
Dr Brownhill said: "Managing young children's behaviour remains a problem in many classrooms, but it is essential that unruly behaviour is managed so that learning and teaching can take place.
"Through our experiences of working in education, and psychological theory, we have drawn together 100 practical resources that can be used by practitioners and teachers of children aged three to eight years old."
The resources offered are practical and hands on in their conception and application, and can be used to support practitioners and teachers in managing a wealth of different behaviours depending on the context and situation in which they occur. The book considers a wide range of physical, verbal, intellectual and visual resources, including:
- Ways a teacher/ practitioner can alter their personal behaviour, such as personal mindset, body language, voice and clothing.
- Behaviour management strategies that they can use with children, such as 'golden time', 'circle time' and 'brain breaks'.
- Reflective resources for children such as using 'a thinking chair', 'traffic lights', 'star of the week' and 'tremendous teddy'.
"We strongly believe that teachers will reap the benefit of the positive behaviour that these ideas will yield," added Dr Brownhill.
