Beauty Business That Just Wouldn't Wait
30 November 2010
From 16 year-old school leaver to beauty businesswoman; a Leek beauty therapist credits her University of Derby Buxton tutors with giving her the confidence to start her own business as she graduates this Saturday (December 4).
At the start of 2010, Vicky Day aged 21, signed the lease for her perfect premises in Leek, and by March 'The Pamper Pit' was open for business. However, Vicky didn't complete her degree in International Spa Management until later in the summer, and graduates on December 4.
Vicky began studying at the Buxton campus five years ago when she enrolled on an NVQ Level 2 in Hair and Beauty. She went on to successfully complete an NVQ Level 3, and was encouraged by her tutors to progress into higher education by enrolling on a foundation degree.
Vicky said: "I really enjoyed studying at Buxton, and each time I completed a year of study I wanted to stay on and achieve more. My tutors and lecturers always encouraged me to push myself, and I certainly wouldn't have gone on to complete an honours degree without their encouragement.
"They also supported me during the final six months of my studies when I was working hard to complete my assignments at the same time as opening The Pamper Pit.
Vicky's ideal premises for a beauty studio came onto the market in January 2010, and as she didn't want to miss the opportunity to start her own business, she decided to go for it. "My tutors and lecturers were understanding and supportive, and now I have my own business, which is going really well so far," she said.
Vicky feels that the business orientated modules and work placements she undertook throughout her studies at Buxton put her in good stead.
Isobel Stockdale, Programme Leader at the University of Derby Buxton, said: "Vicky was determined to have her own beauty business. We're delighted that she had the confidence and skill to go for it when the opportunity came up. We all wish her the best of luck for the future."
The Pamper Pit is on St Edward Street, Leek. Contact them on 01538 373780 if you would like to find out more.
