La Traviata on the Big Screen

Last year's production of La Traviata on the Big Screen in the Market Place.

We're really excited that this production of Carmen is being brought to Derby through the Big Screen. We hope that the new sound system will make it feel as if the performance is actually taking place in the Market Square

Derby's Market Place will be alive with the sound of Opera tonight when the Royal Opera House's production of Carmen is broadcast live on the BBC Big Screen. The screen's brand new speakers will bring improved sound quality.

The BP Summer Big Screen event is a unique opportunity for people to experience a live production from the famous Royal Opera House. Their production of Bizet's Carmen will be beamed live from London to Big Screens across the country, including Derby. The free event starts at 6.15pm tonight when Derbyshire soprano Miss Yu Zhou will perform arias from popular operas and lead the audience in a Carmen sing-along. The performance commences at 7pm.

Helen Osler, Interim Director of Leisure and Culture at Derby City Council, said: "We're really excited that this production of Carmen is being brought to Derby through the Big Screen. We hope that the new sound system will make it feel as if the performance is actually taking place in the Market Square".

Carmen is a story of Spanish heat, steamy seduction and gypsy passion. From the cigarette factory to the bull-fighting arena, Carmen has a devastating effect on all around her, leaving a trail of broken hearts and broken men. This production has it all; rousing choruses, epic scenery and gripping drama, so bring a picnic, family and friends and join the packed audience in Derby's Market Place to enjoy this unique event.

During the interval, Derby-based theatre group Maison Foo will entertain the audience with their unique brand of street theatre.

Tables and chairs are provided and refreshments are available in outlets nearby throughout the evening.

Derby's BBC Big Screen is sponsored by the University of Derby, Derby City Council and the BBC. For more information on the event visit. www.derby.ac.uk/events.
