The University's incoming Athletics Union President, Mark Farthing, takes a moment to reflect on receiving the 'Most Improved University' at the 2012 British Universities and Colleges Sport league (BUCS) Awards, on behalf of Team Derby,

"Taking on the role of Athletic Union President following the tremendous success we have achieved this year is extremely exciting for me as it is. However, this national award goes even further to validate what myself and many others believe within the institution, that Team Derby is developing into one of the most focused and driven sporting universities in the UK.

"I felt honoured to be able to collect the award on behalf of everyone who has put in an immeasurable amount of hard work this year and I can't stress enough the impact the current crop of students have had in achieving this recognition.

"In terms of what comes next, I believe we can go one of two ways... either we rest on our laurels, bask in the glory and look back in ten years at the time we were the most improved University.

"Or, we can use the momentum we have worked so hard to build to have an avalanche effect on the BUCS league table, destroying everyone in our path. Allowing us to look back in ten years as the most improved University of the decade!"
