A Good Deal Better
23 February 2011
'All staff should strive to get the best deal for every purchase, as they would in their personal shopping.'
This is the key message from the University's new Head of Procurement, Andy Brown.
Andy joined the University in November 2010. His previous role was Head of Regional Partnerships at emda, where he assisted businesses with procurement, commercial and manufacturing management advice. He has also worked in the private sector for Thorn EMI, Hunslet Transportation Ltd and British Rail Engineering.
Since taking up the role of Head of Procurement, Andy has been looking at how the University can save money through its purchasing. He says that money can be saved without impacting on the University's quality of service.
"Staff in every department have the power to make substantial savings for the University," he said. "By doing things differently and taking responsibility for getting the very best deal for everything we purchase at work, from pens to large building projects, every member of staff can make a difference.
"Investigate alternative suppliers, get more quotes, don't just accept the first quote you're given - challenge it, join up with other teams who are buying the same things as you and negotiate to get a better deal.
"If we think about how we would make a purchase in our personal shopping, and use the same tactics at work, we could make a significant difference."
Andy and Senior Procurement Officer Jane Brailsford are on hand to give advice and guidance on procurement, negotiation and supplier management. They can also provide training for individuals and teams. Contact them on 01332 591092.
Over the coming weeks, Jane will be making contact with individual departments to help them identify ways they can save money.
