Julie Stone, Head of University of Derby Online

Connected met with Julie Stone, Head of UDOL, to find out what the future holds for online learning at Derby...

What is UDOL?

The University of Derby Online is a dedicated operating division of the University that provides an opportunity for students who wish to study online and is focussed on the online student experience.

Why does the University need an online learning element?

Not all students can attend University so there's a demand for an alternative way to study, and the growth of technology has made it easier for us to facilitate online learning. UDOL enables students to study part-time from anywhere in the world and opens up new markets for the University - a part-time offer on a global-basis.

What are the benefits of studying online?

Online study provides flexibility and can take place from anywhere in the world - whether at a desk or on the move through mobile devices. Students can fit study around existing personal and work demands, choose when to access their course material and engage with other students from around the globe to share good practice and advice.

How can staff get involved?

The UDOL team is currently focussed on the migration of programmes from the faculties ready for delivery through UDOL this September. We will also be looking to develop online communities for staff to engage with subject areas in the faculty and based on the success of the UDOL Conference we hope that there will be similar events in the future, so please look out for notice of these.

What's next for UDOL?

We're currently finalising staffing appointments to secure the infrastructure for UDOL's initial offering of online programmes from September 2012. Our focus is on ensuring a consistent standard of module content and learning activities for students across our portfolio and producing an excellent learning experience from enquiry through to graduation.

What are your aspirations for UDOL?

To become a Centre of Excellence for Online Learning and continue to be a leader in providing a dedicated and focussed learning experience for online students.

Where can we find out more?

UDOL intranet pages will continue to provide updates and information is regularly being shared with Deans and Assistant Deans and Heads of Department.
