Set to open in 2024/2025, superb new teaching facilities will build on our established reputation for inspirational teaching and research excellence, as we shape the next generation of highly qualified business leaders. Our vision is of a thriving community of business thinkers at all levels, from students to academics and researchers, all collaborating to support new ideas and strategies for global business.

New building design

In a prime city centre location, the new Business School will also be a focal point for Derby’s business community, providing a place where our talented students and expert academics can network with, learn from, and inspire local business leaders and entrepreneurs. Start-ups and small businesses will be able to access the expertise and facilities on their doorstep to support and nurture their growth.

It will make a significant contribution to the vision of a vibrant Central Business District in the city, and will support Derby’s plans for growth and regeneration. At the same time, students will have the city’s range of social, leisure and retail facilities within easy reach.

We take our responsibility to the environment seriously too, and are working towards net zero carbon construction and operation for the building. Its location close to halls of residence means that students can walk or cycle easily, creating healthier commuting options as part of our overall goal of an active campus.

University raises £70m funding for new Business School building

Plans for a new Business School in Derby city centre have been secured after the University of Derby raised £70 million funding to help develop the state-of-the-art Business School.

Plans put forward by the University of Derby to build a Business School in the city centre have been approved.

Construction for the new development, which is proposed to be net zero carbon in construction and operation, is due to start in November 2022, with the building set to open in September 2024.

I joined the University of Derby in January 2022 as Business School Programme Manager, with the overall responsibility of planning and managing the implementation of cross-cutting transformation projects, governance, stakeholder engagement and business change as part of the new Business School.

Derby Business School has become the latest business school to be awarded the Small Business Charter. This national accolade awarded by the Chartered Association of Business Schools is in recognition of the business school’s high standard of support for small businesses and the local economy, as well as the work it does in developing entrepreneurial skills in students. 

Derby Business School is also a full member of the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD) - a network of business schools and corporations dedicated to enhance excellence in management education and development globally.
