The National Scholarship Programme is a scheme devised by the UK government to provide targeted financial assistance with the costs of higher education to those who are eligible. The scheme is aimed at new undergraduate students entering higher education from September 2012 onwards.
Full time undergraduate students, who qualify for a scholarship, will receive an overall benefit of £3,000 in the first year of undergraduate study.
If you're a part time student who qualifies for the Programme this will be a pro-rata amount of £3,000, again with the scholarship provided in year one.
The Scholarship will be paid as £1,000 award direct to you (in instalments) and a £2,000 fee waiver (pro-rata for part time students)
For European Union and part time students, the maintenance element of the National Scholarship Programme is not available. Only the tuition fee waiver can be awarded.
The University of Derby has National Scholarship Programme places for 300 students. This is made up of 150 places funded by government and an additional 150 places funded directly by the University.
Eligibility for a scholarship is assessed by applying selected criteria. There is one national criterion, that the applicant is from a household with an income of less than £25,000. Universities are then asked to add and set their own criteria to distribute the scholarships to those most in need.
The University of Derby has set additional criteria in the following areas:
Students with high UCAS tariff points
This means students with UCAS Tariff points or equivalent qualifications and grades that are of 301 points and above. Applications from those with the highest tariff points or equivalent will be weighted accordingly.
Disabled Students
Students declaring a disability, where evidence exists that they are likely to qualify for Disabled Students' Allowance
Care Leavers/those without parental support
Students applying for a scholarship who are leaving statutory local authority care, and students who the University would expect to be assessed on parental income, who have been assessed as being independent of parental support for the purposes of their student funding.
Low participation postcode areas
Students applying for a scholarship who live in a postcode area that has been recognised as an area from which a relatively low percentage of people enter higher education. More information about low participation post code areas in England and which areas they are can be found on the HEFCE website. This provides an understanding about which areas may qualify, however individual postcodes are listed on a national database available from the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEfCE) that the University will consult in detail by individual postcode.
The criteria set out above are intended to ensure that scholarships reach those who most need them. Therefore students who are able to provide evidence for multiple criteria are more likely to be successful in being awarded a scholarship.
