Michelle Andrews
I studied both Outdoor Recreation and Sport Psychology as a Joint Honours combination that gave me a broad selection of skills that I use on a daily basis in my current job as a residential care worker in Shropshire. An example of this is the understanding of developmental psychology that affects young people in care.
The young people that I work with undertake outdoor activities and the practical skills that I've developed, in and around the Peak District, have been put to good use in both a supportive and instructional role.
The team work skills I developed in practical outdoor recreation modules; such as Outdoor Activity Leadership and studied further in the theory based Sport Psychology pathway, has enabled me to work well with my colleagues in a job that can be extremely stressful.
Most importantly, the three years I spent at Buxton gave me the life experience I needed to be a significant, caring adult in the lives of these troubled young people.
