What I can help with
My key role is to head the Education Liaison team and manage the development and direction of the Progression Scheme and our outreach work.
My team develop and deliver a full range of outreach activities for our target schools and colleges and for other organisations such as Connexions and Aimhigher, both on and off campus.
We also develop activities to engage with particular groups of learners such as apprentices, widening participation groups, gifted and talented students etc and I'm always interested to hear from schools and colleges who want us to work with these groups.
I also manage the Progression Scheme route into the University for students from partner schools and colleges wishing to apply to us and can offer advice and guidance for school and college staff or individual students and their families regarding the application process.
I am also responsible for developing the University's strategy for our attendance at UCAS conventions and other undergraduate recruitment events across the country.
For University staff I can advise about current developments in, or finding information about, 14-19 education, compact and progression arrangements or outreach activities. And through my team's connections with schools and colleges we can promote forthcoming activities such as Faculty events, external speakers, public lectures and open days to help you make these a success.
My background
I came to Derby from Crewe as a student in 1994 and graduated with a BA (Hons) Sociology and Business Psychology degree three years later. I started working for the University almost immediately, firstly for the Research Office but, since 1998, with the Compact Scheme and widening participation more generally. I have managed the scheme since August 2003, firstly in BDU, then FPL and since August this year as part of the Marketing Department following the successful merger of the Compact and Schools Liaison teams. Having completed a Masters degree in Guidance Practice in 2006, my other professional interests are progression arrangements, the 14-19 education agenda and pre-entry information, advice and guidance.
