Loan categories and fines
Loan allowances
Students can borrow up to 12 items at a time, and research students can borrow a maximum of 20 items.
Loan categories and fines
Library materials have various loanable categories which determine the length of time they may be borrowed and the fines charged for late return.
Standard loans
Items in this category:
- are issued for 3 weeks
- may be reserved
- may be renewed, unless requested by another borrower
- have white date labels
Fines accrue on each overdue item at the rate of 10p per day to a maximum of £20, after which the borrower is invoiced for a replacement copy
One week loans
Items in this category:
- are issued for a week during term time (longer at the end of term)
- may be reserved
- may be renewed, unless requested by another borrower
- have yellow spine labels and yellow date labels
Fines accrue at the rate of 50p per day/part day for full time students and staff, and 50p per week/part of week for part time students to a maximum of £20 after which the borrower is invoiced for a replacement copy
Two day loans
Items in this category:
- are issued for 2 days at a time, except Thursdays and Fridays when they are issued to the following Monday
- cannot be reserved or renewed
- must be returned to the site from which they were borrowed
- are denoted by green spine and date labels
Fines accrue on each overdue item at £1 per day to a maximum of £20, after which the borrower is invoiced for a replacement copy
Restricted loan
There are two types of Restricted Loan:
Pink labelled items are for reference only. They can't be removed from the library
Blue labelled items can be taken out of the library
Restricted loan items:
- are available at the Service Desk
- must be returned to the site from which they were borrowed
- may be booked up to 8 days in advance
- may be borrowed for the following time slots:
- 10am - 1pm.
- 1pm - 4 pm
- 4pm - 10am (BLUE label only). Blue labelled items issued on Fridays after 4pm are due back by 10am the following Monday.
Fines accrue on each overdue item at 50p for the first 15 minutes, 50p per HOUR thereafter to a maximum of £20 after which the borrower is invoiced for a replacement copy.
Reference items
- are for use in the library only
- includes all Journals
- are denoted by a red spine label
School practice items
These items may only be borrowed by students registered for education courses
Off air recorded videos
ERA licensed videos (non-Open University off-air recordings)
- can be used off campus for educational purposes
- are issued at the service desk
- are issued for 1 week, provided that the item has not been booked in advance for any time during the required period
- may be renewed at the Library where it was originally borrowed. Telephone renewals are not permitted
- reservation may be made up to a term in advance
- must be returned to the site from which originally borrowed
- fines accrue on each overdue item at 50p for the first 15 minutes and 50p per hour thereafter, to a maximum of £20.
Open University videos
- can only be used in the Library or a classroom on the campus where the item is held
- are issued at the service desk
- are issued for 4 hours from the time of issue
- reservations may be made up to a term in advance
- must be returned to the site from which they were borrowed
- fines accrue on each overdue item at 50p for the first 15 minutes and 50p per hour thereafter, to a maximum of £20.
