» What is the Inter Library Loan (ILL) Service?
The ILLs service obtains from other libraries items such as journal articles, books and conferences which are neither in stock, nor held at any of the University of Derby libraries.
» How long will an Interloan take to arrive?
Items are generally ready for collection within six working days. Sometimes they will take longer, so please allow two to three weeks for their arrival when planning your work.
You may check the progress of your ILL requests in the MyAccount section of the Library Catalogue

» How do I request an item?
Complete a request form for each request. Please include all the details about the item you require, including your source of reference. Wherever possible, please supply a printout of your source of reference.
Before you request an item please check the
Prism Library Catalogue and, if a journal article, the
Electronic Journals A - Z. Items available through our libraries, whether in print or electronic format, may not be requested.
Request forms are available at our libraries. A
pdf and an online version for all eligible users are available. You must sign each request to comply with copyright legislation.
» What is SED (Secure Electronic Delivery)?
Secure Electronic Delivery or SED is an electronic delivery option for inter Library loan article requests. The British Library will forward an email containing a link to access your request.
If a journal article is needed by a number of students, we will endeavour to get one copy only and make it available to you through the Restricted Loan collection. If several articles from the same journal are required we will endeavour to obtain the whole journal.
» How do I request a thesis?
» What happens if I request an item which is 'missing from stock'?
No charge is made for items which are missing from stock. Journal articles will be retained in the Restricted Loan collection and loaned to you.
» How much does an ILL cost?
An ILL costs £2. (This charge is under review) (The charge is non-refundable and also applies to those students with support plans.) Pre-pay at any of our Loans Counters before submitting an online request or pay when you submit your card or printed pdf requests. The charge is not refunded if the item is subsequently found to be in stock or available electronically.
There is no charge for staff or researchers.
Undergraduates may receive 20 interloans per academic year. Additional items may be requested at the rate of £6 per request. £4 of this charge will be refunded if the item is unobtainable. For students on taught Masters courses there is no charge for the first 20 requests. A further 20 requests may then be obtained at £2 each, after which the charge increases to £6. (Please note, these charges are currently under review)
The fine on overdue interloans for all readers is 50p per day. (This fine is under review)
» How do I collect an item?
You will be notified by post that your request is waiting and at which site it is available for collection or by email for SED. It is helpful to bring the letter with you to the library's loan counter when you collect the item. Normally, photocopied articles may be retained by the reader.
» Can I renew an Inter Library Loan?
Items on loan from the British Library are not renewable. However, if the reader has a support plan in place, or there are serious extenuating circumstances beyond the reader's control, then we will endeavour to carry out the renewal.
Items supplied by libraries other than the British Library may be available for renewal. Please make any renewal enquiries in person at a library loans counter.
» Can an Inter Library Loan be recalled?
Occasionally an Inter Library Loan may be recalled before the end of its loan period. Items recalled by the British Library will be subject to reduced loan periods. You will be notified if your loan has been recalled and advised of the new return date.
» Is there any other information I should know?
You are not normally allowed to request the same item again during the same academic year. However, if you have a Support Plan in place, or there are serious extenuating circumstances beyond your control, the request may be progressed.
Post graduate researchers, by the nature of their work, may need to consult an item a second time within an academic year. If so, please speak to a member of the Inter Library Loans staff before proceeding with your request.
If a wrong item is supplied, or pages are missing, we will re-apply for your request at no extra charge.
In general, Inter Library Loans, regardless of format, are not posted to requesters.
