Hannah Lovitt, BA (Hons) Sociology
Choosing Sociology at Derby
I decided to do an undergraduate degree in order to expand on the knowledge I had already gained at school and to enable me to get a higher skilled job in the future.
I enjoyed my Sociology degree as it was all related to real life and topics that affect us daily. It was interesting to learn about these topics from many different perspectives and use them to analyse aspects of daily life.
A great support network
My dissertation tutor was extremely supportive; he was always available when I required help and had endless advice. I wrote my dissertation on how businesses use social media as a result of my interest in the area.
There is lots of support at Derby if you ask for it and this definitely made my time at university easier. The course has so many interesting modules and this allows you to study a large range of topics.
Gaining employment after studying
After finishing my undergraduate degree I went to America to work and travel for 3 months and upon returning to the UK got a job as a motor insurance consultant for Direct Line.
My job requires me to consult with people about their car insurance and advise them on any changes they want to make. Although my job isn't directly related to my degree, there are definitely elements that are related and I use skills within this job that I learnt whilst studying.
Learning lessons for life
The biggest thing I learnt at Uni that has transferred into this job is being organised and punctual which is something that employers expect and a skill I definitely strengthened whilst at university.
The most challenging is the change of learning style as there is a lot of independent work and you have more freedom unlike whilst you’re still at school. This can also be a positive though, as it allows you the freedom to learn in the most suitable way for you.
